Come and delight in live professional dance performance outdoors - up above and all around your city!
The second Urban Moves International Dance Festival surprises the crowds again this summer with a unique blend of dance and spectacle to celebrate the cityscape and architecture of Manchester. For three days some of the best companies from Britain, France and Spain will be out there in the parks and in the fountains, in the squares and in the gardens. Watch out for some awesome aerial dance involving skyscraper cranes and some wicked waterplay!
At this year’s performances you’ll find a fascinating mix of styles and some exhilarating ideas. The Line is a large scale work where scores of people will join hands; Night Cocoons features dancers encased in giant transparent pods; Point of Synthesis fuses flamenco, contemporary and street dance to name but a few and The Garden Project brings the history of Piccadilly Gardens to life. There is romance, humour and some powerful, pounding sounds. Water features more than once and the aerial performances include the skin-tingling Fervorosa, a joyful piece full of the spirit of Buenos Aires that spirals, twists and lunges high above the crowds.
Your own chance to dance is the Latin Lounge at The Ritz. Did you think your days of going to The Ritz were behind you? Or have you not yet experienced the bouncy floor and sticky carpets for yourself? Latin Lounge is a chance to revel in the atmosphere at Manchester’s legendary ballroom with live tango and salsa bands. If you want to excel, you can join us for beginners classes in the early evening.
Urban Moves International Dance Festival is produced by Dance Initiative Greater Manchester. DiGM is the central dance organisation for Greater Manchester, working to bring a whole host of opportunities for you to watch and take part in dance. The festival is developed in close collaboration with Manchester International Arts, (Streets Ahead, FEAST, Enchanted Evenings) By combining our expertise, we can bring high quality British and international dance directly into the town centre.
Approximately 6000 people came to enjoy the city's first Urban Moves in 2005 and we are delighted to welcome even more in 2008, including the people of Manchester and those from across the UK and abroad who have come to see dance in our city. Urban Moves staff will be at each event, so please stay and chat if you’d like to know more about how to fill your time with more dance. Enjoy!
