The second Urban Moves surprised the crowds again in the summer of 2008, with a unique blend of dance & spectacle to celebrate the cityscape & architecture of Manchester. For 3 days some of the best companies from Britain, France & Spain were out in the parks, gardens, fountains & squares of Manchester, Bury & Oldham. Free tango & salsa classes were also offered alongside Latin Lounge, a chance for people to shake, swing & salsa on the dance floor till late with live bands & DJs at The Ritz.
“Move about your city and watch your city move!”
Our 2008 festival featured two thrilling pieces of aerial dance from Wired Aerial Theatre & Cie Retournamont, with the latter using skyscraper cranes in ‘Vide Accorde’. But perhaps most exciting was that the now very well-known Hofesh Shechter Company performing their supremely physical & atmospheric, ‘Uprising’. Very much in his own world of fluid movement & complex dance sequences, he even composed the throbbing percussive score himself. Shechter had just recently choreographed a much talked about dance piece for Channel 4’s Skins, and his stake in the contemporary dance world was really starting to rise.
