MANCHESTER ’S INTERNATIONAL OPEN AIR DANCE FESTIVAL URBAN MOVES – THE FULL PROGRAMME!
Manchester’s much anticipated festival of dance Urban Moves is ready to
reveal its full programme! From Friday 15th to Sunday 17th July, the
city will play host to some of the most inspiring and unusual dance
performances staged in the most unexpected of places! The festival
celebrates the unique cityscape and architecture of Manchester and
features two UK premieres and two specifically commissioned new pieces.
World reputed companies from Britain, Spain and France will literally
be out on the town to entertain and amaze ....

Retouramont (France) - Réflexion de façade
Tickets £3/£2 concessions
Retouramont bring to Manchester Réflexion de façade, an exciting aerial
dance performance previously seen in Italy, Belgium, Spain and Japan.
The vertical dancing, or ‘sculpture dance’, of Retouramont is inspired
by and directly related to the objects, shapes and spaces that are part
of city architecture. Victoria Baths like the Olympic pool in Barcelona
before it, plays host to dancing that relies on your notion of vertigo!
A mastery of space and one for everyone who thought walking on air
wasn’t possible.

Sol Picó (Spain/Catalonia) - Amor Diesel (Diesel Love)

A huge and hugely enjoyable show from Barcelona’s multiple award
winning Sol Picó, this is a spectacle with three ballerinas, three men
and three JCB diggers (a new twist on the eternal triangle!) .
Receiving its UK premiere down at the Arena it tells the story of three
women returning home from a party one night...

Dance In-Tension (Britain) - Point of Synthesis
Free
Point of Synthesis is high energy dance using a mixture of styles that
both compliment and compete against each other. Liverpool group Dance
In-Tension have created a piece with fresh ideas and modern attitude
that draws from a melting pot of forms including flamenco, kung fu,
contemporary and street dance – the first stage of cultural fusion!
Performances on the hour, every hour between 1pm and 5pm
In the event of rain the performances at Exchange Square will transfer

Axial Dance (Britain) - BUBBLE

BUBBLE is intriguing– a duet set in a transparent surreal world ,
reminiscent of a novelty ‘snowstorm’ you can shake and look into.
Beginning and ending in sleep, it’s a world of white which turns blue
as dream s take hold and feathers rain down. Watch from a standpoint or
walk all around it...
In the event of rain the performances at Exchange Square will be

Lowdownndirty (Britain) - Dead Manky
Free
A dance, theatre and mask performance on a hidden plot of wasteland in
the heart of Manchester performed by choreographer Emily Burns and mask
maker Steven Whinnery. Join them in occupying this piece of land where
risk and fear, the bizarre and the extraordinary are experienced in an
anarchic display of dance and mayhem. Wear sensible shoes and take a
trip into an underworld where a cast of dodgy and unpredictable
characters spin out of control and wrestle with life.
Suitable for age 12+, saucy so be prepared

Vendaval (France) - Raconte Moi (Tell Me)
Free
Vendaval are a French-based company of mostly Spanish dancers with a
performance inspired by the places they've passed through and the
journeys each has made. Raconte Moi, danced on a scaffold, conveys the
excitement and difficulty of communication in a new country and pays
homage to Andalucia and the influence of tango.
In the event of rain the performances in Exchange Square will be
transferred to the Printworks

Choreographed by Inés Boza, Senza Tempo (Spain/Catalonia) - La Travesia

Right at the birthplace of the industrial revolution, stand the bridges
of Castlefield at the junction of the first canals. What have they
seen, what have they witnessed during all these long years? “Any place
has a history, lots of histories to count”...and La Travesia (The Cross
Roads) adds a new chapter. Inés Boza is the Director of Senza Tempo,
Spain’s leading exponents of open air dance, who have been frequent
visitors to Manchester, premiering two of their previous works here in
Castlefield. She has been commissioned by Urban moves to work with six
British dancers to create a new site specific work for the festival.

Compagnie Ecart (France) - Chin-Chilla
Tickets £5/£3 concessions
Compagnie Ecart, are a group world renowned for dance in unusual
spaces. Chin-Chilla is a cinematographic dance piece which will be
performed in an atmospheric underground car park at a secret location!
Merging real and virtual video images to create visual illusions, it tells of an
incident in the little town of Chin-Chilla where an appointment is missed
and a story upset...

NOTES TO EDITORS
Background
Dance Initiative Greater Manchester
DiGM is the dance agency for Greater Manchester, and a partner in
national dance agency Dance Northwest. The agency runs creative
projects throughout the region, and provides grants, advice and
information. Current active projects include Afro-Vibes, workshops in
African and Caribbean dance; a collaboration with the Commonwealth Film
Festival to present When Dance Meets Film, a dedicated dance in film
strand; Danceworks 2005, a community dance showcase; Greater
Manchester Youth Games , a youth dance showcase; Older People Dancing,
dance provision for older people.
Manchester International Arts
MIA are the organisers of the Garden of Delights, Streets Ahead and
other major open air events and festivals in Manchester. As with all their
projects, they will be helping to present innovative and unique
international and British acts with the aim of creating an exciting and
energetic atmosphere in Manchester City Centre.
